We are seeking an Automated Layout Technician to join our team and work closely with both our VDC and field teams to bring cutting-edge layout technology to project sites. If you’re passionate about innovation, and excited to be part of an evolving industry, we want to hear from you!
Position Overview: As an Automated Layout Robot Technician, you will play a key role in executing precise layout using advanced robotic technology. You will work closely with both the VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) teams and field crews to ensure accurate layout and seamless integration between digital models and physical site conditions. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail are essential to this role, as you will bridge the gap between the digital design and on-site layout.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Automated Layout Robots. Utilize cutting-edge layout technology – such as Dusty Robotics FieldPrinter – to execute precise layouts directly from BIM models and CAD files on jobsites.
- Facilitate Communication between VDC and Field Teams. Act as a liaison between the VDC team and field personnel to ensure layout data is accurate, up-to-date, and easily understood by all stakeholders.
- Interpret Digital Models and CAD Files. Work with VDC teams to understand mission critical details of the layout project and provide feedback on the files’ printability.
- Survey Integration. Collaborate with internal field teams or GCs before layout to verify control points have been placed prior to mobilization and confirm their accuracy.
- Troubleshooting. Provide on-the-fly problem-solving when faced with challenging site conditions, ensuring the layout robot performs effectively in a dynamic environment.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong computer skills with a demonstrated aptitude for learning and using new technologies.
- Experience in construction or related fields (VDC, BIM, surveying, or layout preferred)
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to bridge digital-physical workflows
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work under tight deadlines
- Understanding of robotic total stations or similar layout technology
- Ability to interpret and understand complex construction drawings
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs of equipment on uneven terrain
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to jobsites
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in automated layout technologies, such as Dusty Robotics FieldPrinter
- Surveying experience or strong understanding of control points
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or other design/modeling software is a plus
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish and English) is a plus
Location and Travel
- The role will involve a mix of office-based work and on-site layout operations.
- Travel to project sites (regional or national) may be required depending on project needs.
